Grilling burgers may seem like a straightforward enough task, and most people are under the impression that they’ve conquered this skill. The burger may seem like a plain and common meal, but there are some tricks to it as well, and you can’t prepare it just any way. Today we thought of giving you a few tips on how to grill burgers on charcoal so you can make sure that every time you cook them, you achieve the best results with the best taste and flavors. Follow these steps and you will not be disappointed:

  • The Recipe

When you learn how to grill burgers on charcoal you have to begin with the burger recipe, which is very important. If you want to have delicious burgers, then you should prepare the meat yourself; only if time is pressing you can buy already mixed burger meat, but otherwise it will be much tastier if you mix it yourself. The ideal meat for burgers is beef, but in some parts of the world pork can be used as well, or a mixture between pork and beef. Here is one recipe we recommend and which won’t fail you: take two pounds of fresh ground beef, 1/4 cup of breadcrumbs, one slightly beaten egg and mix them together. To this mix you can add two tablespoons of barbecue sauce and two tablespoons of ketchup, but it is not mandatory. Finally, add some burger seasoning; you can either find this in stores, or prepare your own with salt, pepper, garlic, paprika and others and add to taste.

  • The Mold

After your meat mix is ready, start shaping those patties into the sizes you prefer; you should also take into account the size of the bread buns you have, so there aren’t any inconsistencies. Nevertheless, no matter how large you make them in diameter, you should avoid making them too thick; thus, you should strive to make them no thicker than an inch. A trick to making sure the patties cook well and uniformly is to poke them a small hole in the middle, so that gets well cooked as well. This is essential to learning how to grill burgers on charcoal.

  • The Charcoal Grill

While your patties await, prepare the charcoals; utilizing a charcoal grill is something you should already know how to use, because this type of grill is more fickle. You have to slowly learn how much charcoal to add depending on what you’re cooking, how hot the charcoals have to be when you throw the meat over and how much to wait before they are done. If it takes longer for the charcoal to heat, light it up while you’re preparing the patties and have someone supervise it for you; that way, by the time you’re done with the burger patties, the grill will be just ready. Pay attention to the fact that we recommended someone always be near the grill supervising it, any fire should not be left alone.

  • Start Grilling

Now you are ready to actually learn how to grill burgers on charcoal; place the patties on the grate carefully not to spoil their shapes, and place them at decent distance so they don’t touch each other. A good trick for newbies is to avoid putting the burgers directly on the grill, and have them placed on a single-use aluminum tray instead; this is particularly helpful if your mix is a bit crumbly and you fear they might break apart on the grill. Depending on how large they are and how hot the grill is, it will take between 5 to 8 minutes of cooking on each side. It is also important to keep the grill’s lid on, so the heat circulates well between your meat. A few minutes before the burgers are done, you can remove them from the tray and place them on the grate to absorb that delicious charcoal grill flavor. Have them sit like that for a few minutes on each side, but make sure they don’t get burned.

If you like, one minute before removing the burgers, add a slice of cheese on top of each, so it gets slightly melted and more malleable. Season your burger with plenty of fresh or pickled vegetables like tomatoes, salad, grilled eggplant, fresh or picked cucumbers and so on. Finally, there are plenty other tricks that can help you achieve the best burgers; for example, you can invest in a meat thermometer, which will be helpful not only when cooking burgers, but other meats as well, as each type and each recipe has its own temperature specifications.
